This story started with a challenge, in which readers submitted ideas: Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project, the Golden Gate Bridge, a red light district, St. Louis during a Cardinals playoff run, and . . . dancing bears. The challenge was to incorporate all of these points in a short story.
What emerged was a story about friendship, love, life and death. And, incidentally, the largest single loan made and repaid in human history, about which no one knows.
